UGC Encourages Universities to Promote the Food Safety Campaigns Initiated by FSSAI Among their Students

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has encouraged all higher education institutions and universities to promote Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) messages on healthy Food Safety Campaigns including food habits, information, and education to educate students about food safety.

In his letter, UGC Secretary Manish Joshi stated that every year, there are millions of people worldwide who suffer from foodborne illness because of improper handling, storage, or preparation of food. Students, in particular, are at a higher risk due to their busy schedules and dependency on ready-to-eat meals.

To address this issue, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which is the country’s top food regulator under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has been using its social media platforms to share updates on healthy food habits, provide information, and run educational campaigns to educate and empower consumers. They also issue alerts regarding foodborne illnesses.

According to a UGC official, the FSSAI initiative intends to educate students about the significance of food safety practices and provide them with the necessary knowledge and abilities to make informed decisions about their dietary habits.

The letter requests Higher Education institutions to take the lead in spreading FSSAI messages and boost food safety initiatives that will cultivate a culture of awareness regarding food safety and enhance the welfare of the student community.

The initiative is in line with larger public health objectives, seeking to decrease the occurrence of foodborne diseases and enhance overall public health results. By encouraging awareness of food safety, universities can play a significant role in the health of their students.

This helps establish a safer and healthier atmosphere that promotes academic achievement and personal growth. The partnership between the UGC, FSSAI, and educational institutions emphasizes the significance of preventive health practices and the impact of education on cultivating a healthier community.
