Observing the recent cases of deaths across India attributed to the consumption of substandard health supplements or nutraceutical products, Maharashtra firm ‘Big Muscles’ fined for selling protein powder ‘spiked’ with high levels of sugar, unknown amino acids.
The firm has to pay a Powai-based fitness enthusiast Rahul Shekhawat Rs 1.1 lakh who discovered that the Rs 1,599 protein powder he had bought from them online last year contained harmful ingredients.
Following a notice to the company that went unanswered, Shekhawat filed a complaint with the consumer forum. The company failed to appear before the forum.
Mumbai-based fitness enthusiast Rahul Shekhawat found that his online-purchased protein powder contained misleading information and potentially harmful ingredients.
The study’s authors deemed Big Muscles protein powders the worst. The brand has a history of mislabeling controversies.
Big Muscles Nutrition Pvt Ltd, artificially inflate the protein content of the product by incorporating unidentified amino acids.
The independent lab report showed the presence of sugar and carbohydrates, contradicting the company’s claims of a sugar-free product.
Studies shows that consumption of such a protein-spiked powder can lead to short-term side effects, such as headaches, acne, bloating, nausea and diarrhoea.
Prolonged consumption can lead to long-term side effects including heart issues and liver damage
The commission said laboratory reports had showed that the brand’s label had made numerous false claims about the product ingredient.
Till now the firm didn’t respond to the complaint.
This case highlights the importance of consumer awareness and the potential dangers of unsubstantiated claims in the health supplement industry.
