MARS is Hiring for a Quality & Food Safety Technologist

The Quality & Food Safety Technologist – Project Role is tasked with ensuring the implementation of all relevant Q&FS standards while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement to guarantee quality and food safety at the local site during planned expansion projects.

This role is crucial for safeguarding consumer interests and maintaining brand quality. Additionally, it involves overseeing the food safety team and managing the verification plan to support the overall program.

Education

Minimum Qualifications: A degree is required, with a Master’s degree in Food Science or a related field preferred.

Training in HACCP and/or ISO 22000 and lead auditor certification is preferred.

Experience

  • Successfully developed and managed a food safety program, such as HACCP or a similar framework.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead quality management systems independently.
  • Possess a solid understanding of root cause analysis.
  • Preferred qualifications include familiarity with extruded and retorted processes, as well as packaging for pet food products.
  • Preferred: At least 6 years of experience in Quality and Food Safety.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee QFS activities related to the New Expansion project, ensuring its seamless integration with the existing site.
  • Provide guidance and support to the project team in training and capability development for the Food Safety Management Program within the scope of the new expansion, ensuring a ‘Right First Time’ approach from design to execution while adhering to all relevant QFS standards.
  • Review the Site Layout Design in collaboration with the Site and Project Team to ensure compliance with key QFS requirements and standards, including GMP, HACCP, and Dry Petcare Standards.
  • Assist the Project Team in conducting QFS risk assessments and FMEA per the defined Project Execution DFVS and other CVS plans.
  • Engage in project discussions, offering timely decisions and approvals from a QFS perspective.
  • Conduct regular quality audits to ensure the effective execution of planned activities within the New Project scope.
  • Keep the Site Team informed of any changes related to the New Project and their potential Q&FS impacts, participate in risk assessments, and ensure that no major issues arise.
  • Collaborate with the TPL (R&D Project Lead), Site, and other Regional Q&FS Leads to obtain necessary support and clarity, ensuring timely and high-quality decision-making regarding project activities.
  • Engage with the Project Team to understand the Masterplan and ensure that QFS Risk Assessments are conducted not only for current conditions but also with an eye toward future expansions based on present insights.
  • The associate is responsible for the effective implementation of the Mars Quality Management Process (QMP) and adherence to Quality and Food Safety requirements, including Personnel Hygiene and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as specified by the organization.
  • The associate will deliver results through the respective Area/Process Standard Operating Procedures and must meet the basic competency requirements outlined in the job Role Skill Matrix to ensure that Quality and Food Safety standards are satisfactorily met.
  • SES – Foster a strong SES culture within the team by actively demonstrating its principles, involving team members in all SES initiatives, establishing SES objectives as annual Key Result Areas (KRAs), and effectively implementing the SES Policy and Management System.
  • Ensure that risk assessments are conducted and that controls are established and maintained for all operational activities. Ultimately, it is the responsibility to guarantee compliance with Mars Global Standards, asset conservation standards, and all applicable local SES regulations.

Quality & Food Safety Technologist, MARS

Background and Scope

  • Corporate Q&FS standards are being integrated into the New Site Expansion Scope to ensure effective implementation. The Q&FS teams at the project site will evaluate any gaps and gather the requirements for compliance, facilitating regional consolidation and presentation to the Project and Local/Regional/Global teams.
  • It is essential to regularly review and enhance these implemented standards to maintain the quality and food safety of site activities. The Q&FS technologist will apply the regionally developed auditing framework and will identify and train local associates for future audits in the New Scope area.
  • After the Project Expansion and during Commercial Operations, if a non-conformance occurs that affects the product, the Q&FS Technologist will manage the incident using the PRIMP process and will oversee the implementation of corrective and/or preventative actions, as well as the disposition of any held products.
  • Centralized regional strategies for Quality & Food Safety (Q&FS) will be implemented, with each site responsible for measuring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) locally. These KPIs will be included in management reviews, and the designated role will be responsible for gathering and presenting this information.
  • The Project Q&FS technologist will offer recommendations regarding food safety issues, particularly focusing on verification activities for both raw materials and finished products, taking into account the New Expansion Scope and any changes. If technical expertise is needed, the Site/Regional Q&FS team of specialists will provide the necessary input, which may include recommendations for laboratory analysis or escalation to Regional R&D resources.
