Health Concerns arise From the Presence of Heavy Metals in Lindt Chocolates

Swiss chocolatiers Lindt & Sprüngli are currently involved in a lawsuit in the United States. The legal action alleges that their dark chocolate bars contain elevated levels of lead and cadmium, both of which are toxic heavy metals.

This legal action was initiated in February 2023 following a 2022 report by Consumer Reports, which examined 28 dark chocolate bars available in the US for the presence of heavy metals.

The report indicated that Lindt’s chocolates contained trace amounts of lead and cadmium, but they were not the most problematic. Two products from Lindt, marketed under the Ghirardelli brand, were identified as “safer choices” due to their lower levels of these metals in comparison to other options.

Lindt has refuted the allegations presented in the lawsuit. The company stated Lindt & Sprüngli contests all claims made in the US lawsuit. Our quality and safety protocols guarantee that all our products are safe for consumption.

The company stated that its chocolates comply with all safety regulations and standards. Nevertheless, the lawsuit has sparked worries among American consumers regarding the safety of products such as dark chocolate.

A study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition reveals that dark chocolates and related cocoa products contain contaminants such as lead and cadmium. These neurotoxic metals are associated with cancer, chronic illnesses, and reproductive and developmental problems, particularly in children.
