UGC Announces Students with a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree and 75% Marks can Pursue a PhD Directly

According to UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar, students who have completed a four-year undergraduate degree can now take the NET exam and pursue a PhD directly.

To pursue a PhD with or without a JRF, candidates must have obtained a minimum of 75 percent marks or equivalent grades in their four-year undergraduate program.

Up to this point, candidates for the National Eligibility Test (NET) were required to have a master’s degree with at least 55 percent marks.

According to Kumar, individuals holding four-year undergraduate degrees can now directly pursue a PhD and take the NET exam. These candidates have the freedom to choose any subject for their PhD, regardless of the discipline in which they obtained their bachelor’s degree.

Pursue a PhD directly

According to the UGC chairman, candidates who have completed a four-year or eight-semester bachelor’s degree program must have at least 75 percent marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade on a point scale if a grading system is used.

He added that the UGC may allow a relaxation of five percent marks or its equivalent grade for candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), differently abled, economically weaker sections, and other categories, as per their decision.
