The Food Safety Commissioner in Telangana has released a notification prohibiting the manufacturing, storing, distributing, transporting, and selling of Gutka and Pan masala that contain tobacco and nicotine.
This ban will be in effect for one year starting May 24th, per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and its regulations.
To prioritize public health and minimize the use of harmful substances, the decision has been made to prohibit the sale of Gutka and Pan masala for one year.
These products are well known for their addictive nature, primarily due to the addition of tobacco and nicotine, which can result in severe health complications such as oral cancer and respiratory diseases.
The Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana State, has issued a notification exercising the powers granted under clause (a) of Subsection (2) of Section 30 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, in conjunction with 2.3.4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulation 2011.
This action has been taken in the interest of public health. The notification states that the manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation, and sale of Gutkha or Pan masala, which contains tobacco and nicotine as an ingredient and is packaged in sachets or pouches or packages or containers, or any other name it may be known by, is prohibited throughout the entire state of Telangana for one year, starting from 24th May 2024.
The Commissioner of Food Safety has appealed to the public to cooperate with the authorities and follow this new regulation, highlighting the importance of safeguarding their health and well-being.
Smokeless products like gutka and pan masala containing tobacco and nicotine are hazardous and can have severe health consequences.
