Protein is essential for life – it’s a building block of every human cell and is involved in the vital biochemical functions of the human body.
Animal-based foods with high protein content, like meat, eggs, and milk, are typically included in a high-protein diet.
A diet heavy in protein might not be as healthful as we believe, though.
A recent study by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine revealed that eating too much protein on a daily basis may be linked to heart problems.
High protein diets have been increasingly popular in recent years, whether the protein is taken as a supplement (protein shakes for body builders) or just as a higher-than-usual part of a balanced diet.
Effect consuming high protein
The results of the study showed that diets where more than 22% of calories are derived from protein may increase the incidence of this cardiac disease.
The study revealed a complex molecular mechanism by which eating a high-protein diet can raise immune cell activity linked to the development of atherosclerotic plaque, hence raising the risk of heart disease.
Atherosclerosis– A buildup of cholesterol plaque in the walls of arteries, causing obstruction of blood flow.
