The Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU) School of Agriculture has launched a pioneering degree programme in food safety. This programme, not currently available through traditional, online, or Open and Distance Learning (ODL) modes, is a first-of-its-kind initiative. Students having studied Class 12 with science or agriculture are eligible to apply for new course starting from July 2024 session.
The varsity claims that it is the first university to provide a Bachelor’s degree programmes in food safety and quality management, making the planned degree programme a unique endeavour. The food safety and quality management bachelor’s degree curriculum has been developed to meet the educational needs of different food processing and food safety industry stakeholders.
This programme includes a comprehensive set of courses designed to equip learners with a broad range of discipline specific courses (DSC), minor discipline specific courses, vocational, ability enhancement courses, interdisciplinary courses, skill enhancement courses or internship or dissertation, internship, dissertation, value-added, and research courses.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of this programme can pursue various career paths, including:
– Food safety team leader/member in the food industry or hospitality institutions
– Food safety officer/inspector in regulatory bodies
– Auditor in certification and inspection bodies
– Trainer/Counsellor in training/counselling organizations
– Member of supply chain management teams in retail chains or industries
– Self-employment as certifying professionals, counsellors, trainers, or auditors
