In order to guarantee the compliance and safety of food products intended especially for athletes, The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken an crucial step.
The FSSAI has underlined the necessity of strictly forbidding the inclusion of any substances prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in food products classified as “Food for Sportspersons,” in compliance with WADA standards.
The ‘Food for Sportsperson’ category of the FSS (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Food, and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016 contains the following provisions:
“Prohibited substances declared by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) shall not be added in any of the articles of food specified for sport persons.”
“Food business operator must ensure to check the list of prohibited substances which is published annually by the World Anti-Doping Agency and is effective from the January I every year.”
Testing Laboratory
FSSAI has notified “Centre of Excellence for Research and Analysis of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, National Forensic Sciences University, Sector 9, Gandhinagar, Gujarat with the scope of accreditation “Chemical”.
The current scope of accreditation by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for the said laboratory covers testing of prohibited substances (currently 76) declared by WADA under the discipline “Chemical-Nutritional Supplement.
Enforcement agencies can now test “Food for Sportsperson” products using CERANS to make sure they don’t contain any WADA-prohibited chemicals.
The National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) website contains information about the accreditation scope of the laboratory as well as any updates.
This move underscores FSSAI’s commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of sportspersons.
