Banned Chinese Garlic Floods Indian Market, Allahabad HC Summons UP’s Food Safety Dept.

The Allahabad High Court on Thursday, September 27, in a courtroom ordered the Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration Department to send representatives after an advocate brought Chinese garlic into the courtroom.

About the Allahabad’s court order

The case, which is the result of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) brought by lawyer Moti Lal Yadav, raised concerns about Chinese garlic’s continued availability in Indian markets despite a ban that was imposed in 2014 due to its negative consequences.

He advocated for strong and immediate action against illegal sale of garlic in the state.

According to the PIL, the central government is not doing enough to guarantee that garlic is marketed across the nation, despite the fact that it is readily available in the market.

The officer of the UP government’s Food Safety and Drug Administration Department has been called by the Allahabad High Court in light of this.

The Allahabad High court has additionally ordered Surya Bhan Pandey, India’s Deputy Solicitor General, to obtain guidelines about the process for preventing the entry of such prohibited goods into the nation.

The Allahabad HC also asked if any research had been done to find out how these goods are being smuggled into Indian markets.

This action was taken by the government to prevent farmers and Indian customers from eating contaminated garlic.

Why Chinese Garlic Banned?

According to reports, garlic has a significant concentration of pesticides, which could seriously endanger consumers’ health. It was not up to the required level of quality.

Chinese garlic is used in many Asian recipes and is widely farmed in China.

It is important to remember that Chinese garlic was banned in India in 2014 due to allegations that it was tainted with fungus and had excessive amounts of pesticides.

However, Yadav in the PIL asserted that food safety regulations are broken because Chinese garlic, which is banned but is still widely accessible in markets nationwide due to its possibly carcinogenic qualities.
