The FSSAI in India is working towards speeding up the licensing process for traders and distributors. They are considering issuing licenses within 24 hours of application to enhance the ease of doing business.
A dedicated digital platform will be launched under the proposed plan by FSSAI. Traders will have the convenience of uploading documents online and obtaining licenses within 24 hours.
According to an anonymous official, the FSSAI has included this proposal in the government’s 100-day agenda. At present, it takes one to two months to obtain a license.
The initiative is exclusively for traders and distributors, not manufacturers. Currently, it takes one to two months for traders and distributors to obtain a license. The official explained that FSSAI has recognized that they do not need such a long time and can be granted a license quickly.
FSSAI licenses will now be issued in a digital format, along with a QR code. This QR code provides access to information stored in the FSSAI database, improving transparency and safeguarding against fraudulent activities.
Every food business operator, including pharmacies that sell health supplements or nutraceutical products, must acquire FSSAI registration or a license.
The previous year, a central advisory committee proposed extending the duration of FSSAI licenses for food business operators from one year to a maximum of five years, removing the requirement for yearly renewals.
This initiative, which food business operators had requested for a long time, was well-received by the industry as it would make conducting business easier.
