2548 New Small Food Processing Units in the State of Kerala

Exceeding the Union government’s goal of setting up 2,500 Food processing units, the state has introduced 2,548 new food processing businesses in the fiscal year 2023-2024.

Kerala has now claimed the third spot in the list of micro-food processing units nationwide, with Tamil Nadu and Telangana taking the first and second positions, respectively.

The PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme was introduced by the government in 2020 to formalize and support food processing enterprises in the country. The State has been actively involved in this scheme since its Establishment a few years ago.

According to Suman Billa, the principal secretary of the Department of Industries in Kerala, we have exceeded the target set by the Centre this year by achieving 102%. Over the past few years, there has been a notable rise in the number of food processing enterprises established in our state.

Additionally, approximately one-third of the micro-small-medium enterprises (MSMEs) launched under the state government’s Year of Enterprises project in the last two years are specifically in the food processing sector.

Industries Minister P Rajeev highlighted on Facebook that the food processing sector in Kerala has witnessed amazing growth in the industrial sector.

Exceptional to the Centre’s target, a total of 2,548 industrial units have been initiated under the PMFME scheme within just one year. This success serves as proof of the state’s successful industrial landscape.
