Job Purpose

The Programme Policy Officer (Food Fortification) will work closely with the Programme Policy Officer (Food Fortification) at the Country Office, under the supervision of the Head of the Nutrition and School Feeding Unit.

As a key member of the nutrition and school feeding unit, their main role will be to assist and contribute to WFP’s food fortification initiatives.

Education

An advanced degree in food sciences, food technology, nutrition, or a related field is required.

Experience

  • A minimum of one year of progressively responsible professional experience in food fortification is required.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have previous experience working in collaboration with government agencies, UN organizations, or international non-governmental organizations.
  • Candidates should have experience in managing all aspects of large-scale food fortification programs with a focus on public health, including program design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • A successful track record in building relationships with government entities, the private sector, civil society organizations, UN agencies, donors, and research institutions is essential.
  • Candidates should also have experience in capacity development, particularly in training government counterparts and the private sector on topics related to food fortification.
  • An evidence-based approach, including experience with research and academic publications, is required.
  • Experience in the rice, wheat, oil, milk, and salt sectors in India would be considered an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Assist government equivalent at the national level in developing policy documents, plans, and solutions to address implementation challenges in fortifying rice within social safety nets.
  • Provide technical support, in collaboration with WFP staff, to state governments interested in rice fortification and other food fortification initiatives.
  • This includes offering technological advice, developing cost-effective project proposals, and defining terms of reference.
  • Regularly follow up with states and prepare reports on the progress of implementing the centrally sponsored scheme on fortified rice.
  • Document achievement, best practices, and lessons learned in rice fortification to promote knowledge sharing within WFP and among national partners.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of advocacy strategies and materials to increase commitment, knowledge, and understanding among decision-makers, the private sector, the public sector, the public, and beneficiaries of rice fortification.
  • Advocate for and support the country office’s efforts to diversify the PDS food basket and introduce fortified wheat flour in states that do not currently benefit from it, at department meetings, conferences, workshops, and consultations under the coordination of the unit head

Programme Policy Officer (Food Fortification), WFP

  • Analyze and provide input on nutrition-related documents from other ministries.
  • Explore and develop plans for introducing fortified wheat flour through the PDS.
  • Participate in meetings and workshops as requested by DFPD, preparing background materials and reference documents.
  • Organize meetings to raise awareness and build capacity among stakeholders, such as rice millers’ associations and government counterparts in different states.
  • Coordinate meetings and collaborate with other government departments such as WCD, Education, NITI Aayog, and FSSAI on the implementation of the fortified rice scheme.

  • Willingness to take on additional responsibilities as needed.
  • Frequent travel is required.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English.

Terms & Conditions

  • This position is available to Indian nationals only.

  • The base salary for this position is INR 1,30,728 per month, with an additional 8.33% of the base salary allocated toward social security.

  • All tax liabilities for payments from this contract are the responsibility of the employee.
