Walki and Lactips have partnered together to develop “fully biodegradable, plastics-free” food packaging that uses natural polymers and can be recycled entirely in the paper stream.
With the goal of creating fully biodegradable, plastic-free food packaging using natural polymers recyclable in the paper stream, Lactips, a French company that specializes in the production of natural polymers that are 100% biobased, water-soluble, and biodegradable in various environments.
Walki, a leading Finnish packaging converting company, have announced that they have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA).
Partnership of Walki and Lactips
The companies claim that the Single-Use Plastics Regulation, implemented by the EU, has taken the lead in addressing the rising issue of plastic waste and is encouraging consumers in the food packaging sector to look for methods to switch from conventional plastics derived from fossil fuels to biodegradable alternatives.
The SUP rule focuses on plastic items like snack pouches, salad bowls, and yoghurt cups that are usually used just once before being thrown away.
To help its sector through this shift, the packaging industry is collaborating and inventing.
Lactips and Walki have agreed to work together through a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to create a paper-based food packaging material with a natural polymer coating since they both share a dedication to innovation for sustainable, eco-friendly growth.
A successful partnership initiated in 2022
Lactips and Walki have been collaborating since 2022 to create a grade tailored to Walki’s transformation process in order to provide a natural, recyclable paper stream and/or home compostable solution for the flexible and solid packaging sectors in Europe and Asia.
Under the terms of this new contract, Walki will guarantee that the final packaging goods match market standards for characteristics and processability, while Lactips will supply Walki with novel and distinctive natural polymer compositions.
The new products may be released onto the market as early as 2025–2026 after this last stage.
Walki and Rovema worked together last year to develop a recyclable solution and “easy-to-open” pouch concept for packaging chocolate, dried fruit, nuts, and other snack items.
Its mono-material design, which consists of an LDPE-based film laminated with an MDO-PE film, was claimed to make it compatible with the PE recycling stream.
