UP Enforces Stricter Food Safety: Masks, Gloves, CCTVs, and Owner Details Required at Eateries.

Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh (UP), introduced a set of regulations for eateries around the state.

These new regulations mandate the installation of CCTVs in hotels and restaurants, as well as the wearing of masks and gloves by waiters and kitchen personnel.

To increase accountability, all food and beverage establishments will also have to post the names and addresses of their owners, operators, and managers.

The new rules, which were introduced on Tuesday during a high-level conference, are meant to address the growing number of food contamination cases that have been recorded around the nation.

A thorough inspection effort will be initiated as part of the program, and all food and restaurant employees—regardless of whether they work at upmarket restaurants or little roadside eateries—would be required to undergo police verification..

Recent Cases of Food Contamination

This order is the result of multiple concerning cases of food contamination that the state has been made aware of.

The owner of the restaurant was arrested after a video showed a teenage girl spitting on rotis while making them at a restaurant in the Saharanpur area went viral on September 12.

In a similar vein, last week saw the arrest of a Ghaziabad juice vendor who was accused of combining fruit juice and urine.

Two males in Noida were arrested in another case in June for selling juice tainted with their saliva.

Inspection of Eateries

A thorough inspection effort will be initiated as part of the program, and all food and restaurant employees—regardless of whether they work at upmarket restaurants or little roadside eateries—would be required to undergo police verification.

These inspections will be conducted by teams from the Food Safety and Drug Administration, law enforcement, and local government agencies to make sure that the new cleanliness guidelines are being followed.

The state government is considering amending the Food Safety and Standards Act to boost food safety.

This would mandate that restaurants uphold stringent hygiene regulations and prominently display important details about their operators.

Installation of CCTVs

In order to improve consumer safety and supervision of food preparation areas, food enterprises are required to install CCTVs.

The recorded footage will be securely stored and made accessible to authorities when necessary, promoting transparency and discouraging any improper practices.
