NIFTEM to be Set Up in Bihar: Budget 2025

Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitaraman announced the establishment of National Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship Management (NIFTEM) in Bihar during her union budget 2025-26 speech.

The Finance Minister stated that this initiative is in line with the ‘Purvodya’  mission that aims to accelerate development, increase employment opportunities in youth, increase farmers income and enhance value addition of agricultural produce in Eastern India. She also added that this institute will uplift the food processing activities in the entire Eastern region.

Importance of NIFTEM in Bihar

Bihar has a strong agricultural foundation as it is known as a leading producer of mangoes, litchi, pulses, makhana, wheat, rice, maize, etc. These produce have high processing and export potential. However, due to post-harvest losses and lack of value addition, the state’s economic potential is limited. So by setting up NIFTEM in Bihar, it can serve as a center for research, skill development, and innovation to bridge the gap.

The establishment of NIFTEM in the state is expected to empower local startups and MSMEs, facilitate technology transfer and research collaborations and develop the state as a food processing centre for East India.

Other Benefits

Besides NIFTEM offering entrepreneurship and skill development opportunities, it focuses on other aspects like:

  • Development of infrastructure including roads, parks, and bridges.
  • Promoting indigenous and traditional foods of Bihar like sattu, litchi, jaggery, etc.
  • Increase exports of processed foods by improving processing, packaging and quality control.
  • Development of schools and introduction of skill-based education programs.

Conclusion

The 2025 Bihar budget strongly focuses on sustainable development, better infrastructure, and new opportunities for the people. The establishment of NIFTEM in Bihar will turn the state into a center for food technology, entrepreneurship, and agricultural advancements. With these initiatives, Bihar is moving towards a brighter future, one where its rich agricultural resources can be fully utilized to boost the economy and create jobs. However, the real impact will depend on how well these plans are put into action and whether the benefits reach the people who need them the most.
