McDonald’s India (West & South), operated by Westlife Foodworld, has introduced a new and unique product called the ‘Protein Plus Slice’. This is a 100% vegetarian, plant-based slice that can be added to any burger to increase its protein content. The slice is part of the new ‘Protein Plus Range’, which aims to give customers more healthy and personalized food choices.
New Way to Add Protein
For the first time in the quick-service restaurant (QSR) industry, McDonald’s is giving customers the freedom to customize their protein intake by adding one, two, or even three Protein Plus slices to their favorite burgers. Each slice contributes an additional 5 grams of protein without altering the signature taste of the burgers. With this addition, the McSpicy Paneer now contains 25.29 grams of protein, the McChicken delivers 20.66 grams, the McVeggie offers 15.24 grams, and even the iconic McAloo Tikki provides 13.5 grams of protein, making these meals both tastier and more nutritious.
Made with Science and Care
The Protein Plus Slice has been developed in partnership with CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), a top research body under the Ministry of Science & Technology. It is made using soy and pea proteins, contains no artificial colors or flavors, and is free from onion and garlic, making it suitable for a wide range of diets.
Words from McDonald’s and CFTRI
Akshay Jatia, CEO of Westlife Foodworld, stated that McDonald’s has always focused on offering customers a variety of choices. He emphasized that with the Protein Plus Range, customers can enjoy their favorite burgers while meeting their protein requirements without compromising on taste. Dr. Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Director of CSIR-CFTRI, highlighted that this product reflects how science and industry can collaborate to make everyday meals healthier. She also noted that this marks the second partnership between McDonald’s and CFTRI, following the successful launch of the Multi-Millet Bun last year.
Launch Event
The Protein Plus Slice was officially launched in Mumbai by Shri Yogesh Kadam, Minister of State for Food and Drugs Administration, Government of Maharashtra. Senior FDA officials also attended the event, stressing the need for safe and nutritious food options for today’s consumers.
