The Gujarat government has decided to extend the ban on gutka and tobacco-laced paan masala by one year in an effort to “maintain the health of citizens and future generations,” according to a Thursday press release.
In the state, it is illegal to sell, store, or distribute gutka, tobacco, or paan masala that has been tainted with nicotine.
According to the announcement, the restriction took effect in 2012 as a result of the Food Safety and Standards Act and guidelines developed in 2011.
“Presence of tobacco or nicotine in gutka or paan masala is harmful to human health. Thus, it is necessary to ban gutka to maintain the health of citizens and future generations. It has been decided to extend the ban for one more year from September 13,” it added.
According to a notification published by the Food and Drug Regulatory Authority-Gandhinagar, traders who are found to be selling, stocking, or distributing gutka or paan masala that contains tobacco or nicotine will be subject to severe legal action.
