On August 26, 2024, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) withdrew its caution against false statements made by online food companies offering milk and milk products with the labels “A1” and “A2.”
On 21 August, FSSAI had issued a directive to food business operators, including online retailers, to remove claims of ‘A1’ and ‘A2’ types of milk and milk products from packaging, calling such labelling misleading.
The structure of beta casein protein distinguishes A1 from A2 milk, and statements about A2 proteins in milk fat products were found to be deceptive.
Venugopal Badaravada, a livestock expert and member of the governing council of the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), had also objected to the FSSAI decision.
In a communication to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Badaravada urged him to request FSSAI to withdraw the directive and form a high-level committee of experts to review the issue.
FSSAI has now withdrawn its earlier advisory in accordance with the current order.
The FSSAI has informed stakeholders of its decision to withdraw the recommendation, pending further stakeholder engagement and consultation.
