FSSAI Updated the Instructions for Disposing Used Cooking Oil.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has withdrawn its earlier order that had removed bar on mixing fresh oil with used cooking oil with a Total Polar Compound (TPC) value above 25%.

This order was issued on August 5, 2024.

This is the second time order has been imposed. Recall that the FSSAI had previously ordered, on January 30, 2019, that cooking oil with a TPC value greater than 25% was not to be used with fresh oil.

However, the FSSAI decided to withdraw this provision by a decision dated January 20, 2022, after examining the testing processes and associated enforcement issues.

But by withdrawing its earlier revocation, the FSSAI has now enforced this rule once more through the current ruling.

Therefore, the FSSAI has once again ordered that fresh oil should not be added to cooking oil that has a TPC value greater than 25%.

The FSSAI keeps stressing how crucial it is to dispose of wasted cooking oil properly in order to protect the environment and encourage recycling for advantageous uses.

What is TPC value?

TPC analyzes the amount of oil degradation products, which rise with repeated heating and use.

A TPC result of more than 25% indicates that the oil is low quality and may not be safe to consume.

Effect of using cooking oil with high TPC value

Here are some health effects associated with using such oil:

Increased Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases: High TPC levels may contain trans fats, which are known to increase LDL (bad) cholesterol and decrease HDL (good) cholesterol.

Toxic Compound Formation: Heating oil repeatedly can cause the production of toxic chemicals such acrylamide, aldehydes, and other oxidative byproducts which may be carcinogenic.

Digestive Problems: Eating deteriorated oil can irritate the digestive tract, resulting in nausea, upset stomach, and other digestive problems.

Nutrient Loss: Oil can become less nutritious as it degrades because it loses important fatty acids and other helpful elements.
