The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced a new Central Sector Scheme to strengthen the food testing system in the country. The scheme, called “Strengthening of Food Testing System in the Country”, will provide assistance to states and union territories to set up and upgrade food testing laboratories.
The scheme will also provide for the training of food safety officials and the development of food safety standards. The FSSAI has allocated Rs 14.80 crore to Assam under the scheme for the upgradation of the State Public Health Laboratory in Guwahati.
The scheme is expected to help improve the quality of food available in India and protect consumers from unsafe food. It will also help to create jobs in the food testing sector.
The FSSAI has said that the scheme will be implemented in a phased manner. The first phase of the scheme will focus on setting up and upgrading food testing laboratories in the states and union territories. The second phase of the scheme will focus on training of food safety officials and the development of food safety standards.
The FSSAI has said that the scheme will be implemented in a transparent and accountable manner. The progress of the scheme will be monitored by a high-level committee.
