Position Detail

The position is within the Economic and Social Development Stream’s Food Systems and Food Safety Division (ESF).

This Division leads FAO’s efforts to help Members develop more sustainable agri-food systems.

Working closely with other technical units at headquarters and Decentralized Offices, the Division combines FAO’s scientific and economic analyses to offer better policy guidance and targeted investments in agri-food systems.

By using FAO’s expertise in food safety and quality control and its technical support in value chain development, agro-industry, agribusiness enterprise development, urban food systems, and food loss and waste, the Division enhances and expands food systems support throughout the Organization.

Reporting Lines

The consultant or PSA will carry out their responsibilities with guidance from the Senior Food Safety Officer, ESF. They will closely cooperate with the Food Safety Officer(s) and seek input from other relevant ESF technical officers.

Technical Focus 

The Division requires individuals with extensive technical and policy knowledge to assist in the planning, creating, and executing divisional initiatives, projects, products, and services related to food safety and food controls. These efforts should align with the Division’s goals and the FAO Strategic Framework.

Education

Candidates must have a university degree in food safety, agricultural and veterinary science, food science and technology, or a related field that includes legal and public policy aspects of food safety.

Additionally, a minimum of 5 years of experience in food safety, official food control systems, trade, legal aspects of food safety, and food safety risk analysis is required.

Proficiency in English, French, or Spanish is necessary, along with a basic understanding of at least one other FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian).

For the position of PSA, proficiency in only one language at Level C is required, with options including English, French, or Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Candidates will be responsible for leading, supporting, or executing various tasks, including:
  • Evaluating official food control systems and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Assessing national food control systems using FAO approaches and guiding discussions on priorities and progressive improvement.
  • Reviewing and reformulating food safety and quality policy frameworks based on evidence.
  • Assessing national capacities for involvement in Codex Alimentarius processes and providing recommendations for improvement.
  • Guiding in strengthening food safety risk assessment processes and utilizing the risk analysis framework.
  • Designing and implementing workshops and training courses to enhance national food control systems.
  • Developing projects or programs to strengthen food control systems using logical frameworks or similar approaches.
