Street vendors at the vegetable market in Najafgarh, Delhi, have been instructed to prominently display their names and phone numbers on their carts.
The recent regulation, initiated by local councilor Amit Kharkhari in collaboration with the market association, follows reports of unregistered vendors believed to be “illegal” migrants from Bangladesh and Rohingya communities.
Moving forward, each vendor’s cart will receive a distinct “thela number” from the market association, following an identity verification process that includes the use of documents such as Aadhaar cards.
The association reports that approximately 300 street vendors are selling vegetables in the Najafgarh market area. Vendors who do not have a nameplate are prohibited from selling their goods.
Local BJP councillor Amit Kharkhari stated that the new regulation was implemented for security purposes and was not intended to discriminate against any individual or specific community.
Santosh Rajput, president of the Najafgarh Vyapar Mandal, announced that the market association will keep a comprehensive record of all vendors along with their identity verification.
This information will be submitted to the local police and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to enhance security measures. The verification process is expected to be finalized by November 20.
This initiative is designed to enhance the vegetable market system. By displaying vendors’ names and phone numbers on their carts, customers with complaints can easily reach out to us.
Additionally, this will assist in identifying illegal migrants selling products. We will pass their information on to the MCD and the police, stated Rajput
