Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) has supplied nutritional and longer shelf-life food items, including Nutra Spirulina Chikki, fortified mango bar, energy and protein rich burfi for children, to Kerala landslide survivors staying at relief camps.
According to the institution, on July 30, numerous landslides in Wayanad were caused by intense rains and flash floods.
The landslide destroyed three Wayanad villages—Punjrimattom, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala—and damaged the surrounding villages.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, it said over 9,300 people are staying in 91 relief camps.
Gluten-free ragi biscuits, ragi beverage mix, millet upma mix, kokum fruit bar, amla candy, tamarind candy, high-protein rusks, sambar mix, instant sambar powder, infant food formula for 6-10 months old babies etc.
Hand sanitizers and wet wipes that were provided free of cost by Scheveran Laboratories, Mysuru, were also sent along with the food items.
Three batches of nutrient-dense food products have been supplied by CSIR-CFTRI to the Wayanad relief camps, with the first batch arriving on August 2 and the second and third batches arriving on August 5 and 7, respectively, under the direction of Director Sridevi Annapurna Singh.
These food products are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals, enhanced with a higher concentration of healthy proteins, and manufactured locally utilizing CFTRI technologies.
These measures will help prevent malnutrition and boost immunity in those who are impacted.
Some of the food products were ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook.
Since its founding, the institute has worked extensively in the fields of food science and technology, conducting in-depth research and development.
It also made significant contributions to the nation’s previous disaster relief efforts.
The relief items were delivered to the collections centers at Wayanad by the scientists and staff of CSIR-CFTRI.
These products were handed over to the representative of Government of Kerala, Anita Kumari, Sub-Collector of Wayanad.
