The holy city of Ayodhya is seeking for the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its local goods.
Four more unique products from the holy city, Ayodhya khurchan peda, Ayodhya khadau , Ayodhya tika, and Ayodhya gud (jaggery), are about to join the exclusive group of GI-certified goods, in addition to the well-known Ayodhya Hanumangarhi laddu.
Kashi-based GI expert Padma Shri Rajni Kant has submitted an application to the GI Registry Chennai to add these goods to ODOP.
According to him, petitions for Ayodhya Hanumangarhi laddu and Ayodhya khurchan peda were filed by Halwai Kalyan Samiti.
To obtain GI certification for Ayodhya gud, the Ayodhya Jaggery Foundation submitted an application.
The application has been accepted by the GI Registry in Chennai. All five GI applications have been accepted under the technical and legal processes, according to Rajni Kant.
All five of these Ayodhya traditional products will be proudly introduced to the world as Ayodhya originals in the coming months, when they are officially registered as part of India’s intellectual property under the GI tag.
“We hope these five products will receive GI certification within this financial year. UP has highest number of 75 GI products in the country and 27 applications from the state are in the final stage of receiving Gl certification, a proof that the goods are unique representations of a specific culture, society, or craft,” said Rajni Kant.
“After 33 years of social service, I have been involved in the GI registration process for five products from Ayodhya.”
‘What greater fortune could there be than contributing to the preservation and enhancement of the culture and heritage of 20 states across the country, including Kashi and Ayodhya.”
According to TOI report, Rajni Kant said, a promoter of GI crafts in international events in Indonesia, Singapore, Germany, Israel, Abu Dhabi, and Turkey.
He received the National Intellectual Property award in 2017.
