Amul to set up World’s Largest Curd Plant in Kolkata with Rs 600 Crore Investment

India’s leading brand Amul is going to set up the world’s largest curd plant in Sankrail Food Park, Howrah near Kolkata in two phases by Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd, Anand. making an investment of Rs. 600 crore. 

The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which owns the brand Amul confirmed the investment in a two-day Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS).

Jayan Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF said that the unit will be set up in Kolkata, and this will be the largest curd manufacturing plant in the world with a per day capacity of 10 lakhs. He also added that the total investment for setting up the plant will be 600 crores with a total milk processing capacity of 1.5 million litres per day. 

Kolkata’s Growing Demand

The demand for curd locally known as tok doi and mishti doi, is growing and becoming popular among Bengal’s consumers and people in its surrounding areas. This new facility will help Amul strengthen its presence in the region.

Amul is already the largest fresh milk brand in Bengal, selling over 10 lakh litres of milk daily. The company has a well-established milk procurement network in 14 districts, involving over 1.2 lakh women milk producers.

This expansion will further support the dairy cooperative movement in the state under the White Revolution 2.0 initiative led by the Ministry of Cooperation, Government of India.

Strengthening Amul’s Global Position

The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which manages Amul, is the world’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative. It handles an average of 310 lakh litres of milk per day and has an annual processing capacity of 500 lakh litres. GCMMF recorded a turnover of 59,445 crore in the year 2023-24 reflecting an 8% growth. The company expects a double-digit revenue growth this year due to rising demand.

As per the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN), the leading dairy brand stands 8th among the top 20 dairy companies in terms of milk processing around the world. The brand also exports dairy products to around 50 countries and has extended its reach to the US with a range of fresh milk.

Amul’s new plant will not only meet consumer demand but also boost local dairy farming, create job opportunities, and strengthen Bengal’s position in India’s dairy sector.
