On Friday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) released an advisory urging food business operators (FBOs) to provide information regarding expired or rejected food items, along with the measures taken to prevent their rebranding and resale for human consumption.
Current regulations require FBOs to properly segregate the storage of raw, processed, rejected, recalled, or returned materials or products, ensuring they are clearly marked and securely stored.
To prevent rejected or expired food items from being rebranded and sold as cattle feed for human consumption, a new requirement is being implemented in the Food Safety and Compliance System.
This provision mandates that FSSAI-licensed food manufacturers, including re-packers, re-labelers, and importers, submit information on a quarterly basis, according to the FSSAI.
FBOs must keep a record of the quantity of food products that did not meet quality standards during internal testing or inspection and were subsequently rejected for sale.
Additionally, they should document the quantity of food products that have expired or been returned from the food chain due to expiration or other quality concerns.
