Tea Board Revises Certificate Fee for Darjeeling Tea Exports

The Tea Board of India, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has announced a revision in the processing fee for exporting Darjeeling tea. The update was issued through a circular dated January 12, 2026, and partially amends an earlier notification released on December 31, 2025.

New Fee Structure Effective January 2026

With effect from January 1, 2026, exporters of Darjeeling tea consignments weighing more than 2 kilograms will have to pay a processing fee of ₹2,000 per Non-Preferential Certificate of Origin (CoO). In addition to this amount, applicable GST will be charged as per government norms. The Tea Board has clarified that the Certificate of Origin will be issued only through its official online portal. Exporters must submit applications and complete payments digitally using the Darjeeling tea portal at https://darjeelingtea.teaboard.gov.in. Offline applications will not be accepted under the revised system.

Purpose of the Revision

The revised fee structure is part of the Tea Board’s ongoing efforts to protect the authenticity and global reputation of Darjeeling tea, which holds Geographical Indication (GI) status. The move aims to ensure better monitoring of exports and prevent misuse of the Darjeeling name in international markets.

Exporters are advised to follow the updated fee structure and ensure timely online applications to avoid delays in shipment. The circular has been shared with major tea industry associations, including the Darjeeling Tea Association, ITA, ITEA, TIPA, and CTTA, for smooth and immediate implementation.
