Strict warnings against the eight manufacturers of buckwheat flour have been made by the Food Safety Department of Noida, thereby prohibiting the sale of 15-day-old buckwheat flour. These preventive actions will be implemented before Mahashivratri (26 Feb 2025) as devotees traditionally consume buckwheat (kuttu) bread.
The assistant commissioner of the Food Safety Department, Sarvesh Kumar said that those found selling adulterated buckwheat will face legal consequences. He also added that if people fall ill after consuming adulterated and stale buckwheat, FIR will be registered against them.
To ensure compliance, the food safety authorities said that will collect buckwheat samples randomly from the markets across the city.
Food poisoning cases from stale buckwheat flour have increased by 40% during the festive season in the last five years. On 8th March, about 200 students from Aryan Residency in Knowledge Park complained of food poisoning from food made from buckwheat. Another case in Noida highlights that about 20 people were hospitalized after eating kuttu pakora and puris. Similar cases were also found in Delhi, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad where people suffered from diarrhea and vomiting.
The Food Safety Department advises consumers to buy fresh, well-packaged buckwheat flour from trusted stores.
