McDonald’s introduces self serve cash kiosks, pushing diners away from the cashier.

McDonald’s Corp. is getting closer to a time when automated cashiers will replace human cashiers.

According to people familiar with the new design option, the largest burger restaurant in the world is introducing a new model in the US that features digital ordering stations that can accept cash and provide change, enabling most customers to completely avoid the register.

While jobs like food delivery and customer assistance will still be filled by humans, the new arrangement encourages users to use mobile apps or kiosks, which improves accuracy and speeds up service.

Although most McDonald’s restaurants already feature kiosks, most consumers who don’t use credit or debit cards currently have to wait in line at the counter to complete their transactions with assistance from a staff member.

McDonald’s, which verified the new design choice, said that under the new style, screens behind the counter that typically show the whole menu will instead emphasize specific items and encourage customers to order at the kiosk or on the mobile app.

Orders placed at the counter by those who would like do so are still accepted, and complete printed menus are available upon request.
