McDonald’s India has launched a new Multi Millet Bun as a healthier choice for customers who enjoy burgers but want more nutritious options. This special bun has been developed in partnership with the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysuru India’s top food research institute under CSIR. The new bun uses a mix of five Indian millets: jowar, bajra, ragi, proso, and kodo. Customers can pick this millet bun with any burger on the menu by paying an additional ₹10. McDonald’s plans to make the bun available across more outlets and ordering platforms soon.
McDonald’s Statement on the Launch
Sanjeev Agrawal, Chairman of McDonald’s India (North & East), said the brand supports government initiatives that promote better nutrition and help local farmers. He shared that McDonald’s first began this millet initiative in Mumbai and is now expanding it nationwide. The company hopes to keep collaborating with government programs that contribute to India’s food and economic growth.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh praised the move, calling it a proud moment for Indian food innovation. In an X post, he said that an international brand like McDonald’s adopting a millet-based bun created with Indian technology shows how traditional Indian foods are influencing global food choices. He noted that the initiative reflects the success of India’s Millet Movement, especially after 2023 was celebrated as the International Year of Millets.
What Is India’s Millet Movement?
India’s Millet Movement aims to bring millets back into popularity by encouraging their farming and consumption. Millets use less water compared to crops like rice, making them environmentally friendly.
The movement highlights:
- Their nutritional value
- Their ability to support small farmers
- Their role in sustainable agriculture
Government policies, awareness campaigns, and new millet-based products have all contributed to reviving millet consumption in India and abroad.
Why Millets Are Good for Your Health
- Millets are known for their rich nutritional profile. Here are some benefits:
- Millets contain fibre, antioxidants, and potassium that help reduce bad cholesterol and regulate blood pressure, lowering the risk of heart diseases.
- With a low glycemic index, millets are a safe and healthy option for people with diabetes as they help maintain stable blood sugar levels.
- High fibre and protein content in millets keeps you fuller for longer, which may reduce overeating and support weight control.
- The fibre in millets helps prevent constipation, promotes gut health, and maintains a healthy digestive system.
- Since millets are naturally gluten free, they are ideal for people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
- Finger millet (ragi) is a rich source of calcium, which helps maintain strong bones and reduces the risk of osteoporosis.
- Millets contain antioxidants, zinc, and other nutrients that help reduce inflammation and support the immune system.
