India’s import of pulses rose 90 per cent annually to 47.38 lakh tonnes during 2023-24 to meet domestic demand, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday.
All India’s production of pulses has increased from 163.23 lakh tonnes during 2015-16 to 244.93 lakh tonnes during 2023-24 (as per 3rd Advance Estimates).
“During the last ten years i.e. 2014-15 to 2023-24 (as per 3rd Advance Estimates), total pulses and oilseeds production has increased by 43 per cent and 44 per cent, respectively,” Thakur said.
The PSS has lifted the 25% procurement limit of the commodity’s real production for Tur, Masoor, and Urad for the years 2023–24 and 2024–25 in order to encourage farmers to increase domestic output.
The National Food Security Mission (NFSM) in 28 States and 2 Union Territories, namely Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, and the Crop Diversification Programme (CDP) in the Original Green Revolution States, namely Haryana, Punjab, and Western Uttar Pradesh, are being implemented by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to increase the production of food grains, including pulses.
The purpose of the CDP is to repurpose the area used for water-intensive paddy crop to alternative crops, such as oilseeds, coarse cereals, edible cereals, cotton, etc.
Furthermore, under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), the Indian government gives the states latitude for needs unique to their respective states.
This information was given by the Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Ramnath Thakur in a written reply to Lok Sabha.
