The Government of India has launched various initiatives to enhance milk production and the productivity of bovine animals across the country. These efforts focus on enhancing the genetic quality of native breeds, offering superior breeding services, and ensuring improved healthcare for livestock.
National Livestock Mission – The National Livestock Mission seeks to enhance the availability of quality feed and fodder, offer risk protection for livestock (including dairy animals), and promote entrepreneurship in the fodder sector.
To expand the area dedicated to fodder production, the government is implementing initiatives focused on cultivating fodder from wastelands, rangelands, grasslands, non-arable land, and degraded forest areas.
Rashtriya Gokul Mission – This initiative has benefited millions of animals, resulting in a boost in milk production. High-quality bulls are selected for breeding to enhance the genetic quality of livestock.
In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) – This advanced technology is employed to quickly multiply elite animals and increase the number of high-quality offspring.
Sex-Sorted Semen – This innovative method enables farmers to determine the sex of their calves, facilitating more efficient breeding strategies.
Genomic Selection – is utilized to pinpoint superior animals based on their genetic profiles, expediting genetic enhancement.
MAITRI (Multi-purpose Artificial Insemination Technicians in Rural India) consists of trained technicians who offer quality artificial insemination services directly to farmers’ doorsteps.
National Programme for Dairy Development – This initiative aims to establish dairy infrastructure for the procurement, processing, and marketing of milk and dairy products within the cooperative sector.
It includes training and awareness programs for dairy farmers, provides essential input services like cattle feed and mineral mixtures, and offers support for quality testing of milk and dairy products. Ultimately, this program seeks to enhance the economic well-being of dairy farmers who are part of cooperatives.
Kisan Credit Card (KCC) Scheme – This program offers financial assistance to farmers for a range of agricultural and related activities, including livestock management and dairy farming.
Through these efforts, the Government of India seeks to increase milk production, improve the livelihoods of dairy farmers, and enhance the health and productivity of livestock across the nation.
