Global Food Regulators Summit 2025 Strengthens Global Food Safety Cooperation

The third Global Food Regulators Summit (GFRS) 2025 took place at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, bringing together over 3,500 delegates from 59 countries. Hosted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the event highlighted India’s growing role in leading global discussions on food safety, nutrition, and regulatory cooperation.

Promoting Global Food Standards through Codex

A key focus of the summit was the role of the Codex Alimentarius, an international body that sets global food safety and trade standards. The discussions emphasized how Codex helps harmonize regulations, support safe food trade, and build sustainable food systems. Among the 59 participating nations, 15 were from Asia, including 8 from Southeast Asia, showing the summit’s increasing importance in regional collaboration.

During his address, V. K. Paul, Member of NITI Aayog, highlighted the need for countries to recognize each other’s food standards and adopt digital technologies like traceability systems and e-licensing. These tools, he noted, can make food regulation faster, more transparent, and more efficient. Rajit Punhani, CEO of FSSAI, praised the contributions of international experts, regulators, and scientists, and reaffirmed that the summit strengthens global partnerships in food safety and innovation.

New Training Initiative with WHO

One of the major announcements at the event was the launch of the FSSAI WHO Master Class on Food Safety and Risk Assessment. Developed in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), this program trains food regulators and scientists on topics such as risk assessment, hazard identification, and evidence-based decision-making. Experts from WHO, FAO, and Codex led the sessions.

The GFRS 2025 successfully brought together policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders from around the world. The summit reinforced that Codex remains the foundation of international food safety and trade. By promoting science based regulations, encouraging innovation, and enhancing transparency, the summit showcased how global collaboration can help create a safe, sustainable, and trustworthy food system for the future.
