FSSAI’s New Olive Oil Standards Are Out!

FSSAI Introduce New Standards for Olive Oil

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has updated the absorbency requirements for olive oil under regulation 2.2.1 through the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Second Amendment Regulations, 2023. These requirements will be effective from September 1, 2023.

Absorbency values for different types of olive oil

The notification specifies the absorbency values for different types of olive oil. For Extra Virgin Olive Oil, the absorbency value at 270 nm should be equal to or less than 0.22 with a delta K value of 0.01. For Virgin Olive Oil, the value is set at 0.25 with a delta K value of 0.01. For Ordinary Virgin Olive Oil, the value is set at 0.30 (after passing through activated alumina, absorbency at 270 nm should be equal to or less than 0.11) with a delta K value of 0.01. For Refined Olive Oil, the value is set at 1.10 with a delta K value of 0.16. For Olive Oil, the value is set at 0.90 with a delta K value of 0.15. For Refined Olive-Pomace Oil, the value is set at 2.00 with a delta K value of 0.20. For Olive-Pomace Oil, the value is set at 1.70 with a delta K value of 0.18.

Additional provisions for Moringa Oil

The FSSAI has also added provisions for Moringa Oil, which is obtained from Moringa seeds. The parameters include a refractive index at 40°C with a limit of 1.4520 – 1.4680, saponification value at 167-192, iodine value at 65-70, and unsaponifiable matter not more than 1.5% by mass 5 with an acid value, not more than 6.0.

Standards for Solvent Extracted Crude Vegetable Oils

The amendment regulations also prescribe standards for Solvent Extracted Crude Vegetable Oils, which are not intended for direct human consumption. These oils are extracted using food-grade hexane from sources mentioned in the standards of respective edible oils under sub-regulation 2.2.1 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations. These oils need to be refined before human consumption and conform to the standards specified for refined vegetable oils laid down under clause 16 of regulation 2.2.1.
