FSSAI Withdraws Orders on Use of the Term “ORS” with Brand Names

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had earlier issued directions that restricted the use of the term “ORS” or Oral Rehydration Solution when used alongside brand names. These directions were formally issued on 14 July 2022 and again on 27 February 2024, along with other related communications made in the past.

Decision to Withdraw Orders

After reviewing the matter, FSSAI has now decided to cancel all earlier orders concerning the use of the word “ORS” with brand names. This means the restrictions that were placed through the previous orders will no longer remain in force.

The withdrawal of these earlier orders takes effect immediately. From now on, food businesses and licensing authorities will not be bound by the earlier instructions issued on this subject.

Official Approval

The decision has been made with the approval of the competent authority. The official notice was digitally signed by Sweety Behera on 14 October 2025 at 4:44 pm.

This withdrawal order has been communicated to the Commissioners of Food Safety in all States and Union Territories as well as to all Central Licensing Authorities under FSSAI.
