FSSAI Pushes States Toward Healthier Diets with 10% Oil Reduction Target

In a significant push towards public health reform, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has urged States and Union Territories (UTs) to intensify their efforts in addressing rising obesity rates and reducing oil consumption by 10 percent. The appeal was made during the 47th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting held in New Delhi on May 27.

The meeting brought together over 60 representatives, including Food Safety Commissioners from across the country, central government officials, and stakeholders from agriculture, food industry, research, and consumer rights sectors. The agenda focused on developing coordinated strategies to promote food safety, healthy dietary habits, and stricter regulatory compliance.

Obesity and Oil Consumption Under the Spotlight

Recognizing obesity as a growing public health challenge, the FSSAI emphasized the need for robust interventions at the state and local levels. It called on local administrations to lead targeted awareness drives and enforce initiatives to reduce the population’s reliance on unhealthy dietary practices, particularly excessive oil consumption.

FSSAI spokeperson stated that the  goal is to build an obesity-free and healthier India, highlighting the importance of community involvement in health-centric programs.

Sugar Boards in Schools: Cultivating Healthy Habits Early

A major talking point at the meeting was the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) directive for schools to establish ‘sugar boards’. These are intended to educate students about the risks of high sugar intake and to encourage mindful consumption from a young age. The FSSAI praised the initiative, viewing it as a critical step toward instilling lifelong healthy eating habits.

Expansion of ‘Eat Right India’ and Food Safety Monitoring

FSSAI reiterated its commitment to expanding the Eat Right India movement and enhancing food safety across the country. The authority requested more active participation from States and UTs in promoting safe, nutritious, and affordable food for all communities. It also offered technical and infrastructural support to help local bodies implement these programs effectively.

Crackdown on Illegal Fruit Ripening Practices

In a move to further strengthen food safety, FSSAI highlighted the ongoing issue of illegal fruit ripening using calcium carbide commonly referred to as ‘masala’ and the use of synthetic colors and coatings. Officials were instructed to ramp up surveillance and conduct routine inspections at fruit markets and cold storage units to eliminate these hazardous practices.

Collaborative Approach to Public Health

With active participation from various ministries and industry stakeholders, the 47th CAC meeting underscored the importance of multi-sector collaboration in achieving national food safety and nutrition goals. The FSSAI reaffirmed its role as a facilitator and regulator, ensuring all Indians have access to food that is not only safe but also contributes positively to their health and well-being.

As India faces the dual challenge of undernutrition and lifestyle-related health issues, these measures reflect a proactive stance by the FSSAI to safeguard public health through better food practices, stronger regulations, and community engagement.
