FSSAI Orders Strict Action on Illegal Use of Auramine Dye in Food

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a strong warning and enforcement order after receiving complaints that some food sellers are adding Auramine, a harmful industrial dye, to roasted chana and other similar food products to make them look more colourful and attractive.

Auramine Is Not Allowed in Food

Auramine is a synthetic yellow dye used in textiles and leather industries, and it is not permitted for use in any food product under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. Adding this dye makes the food unsafe and hazardous as per Section 3(1)(zz)(v) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

FSSAI has directed all state and central food safety authorities to start targeted inspections, sampling, testing, and surveillance of roasted chana,  similar snacks and food items and products sold in organised markets, small shops, and online platforms. These checks will cover businesses involved in manufacturing, processing, storage, transportation, and sale of the affected food products.

Action Against Violating Food Businesses

If food businesses are found using Auramine or selling contaminated items, strict legal action will be taken. This may include penalties, license suspension and license cancellation All Food Business Operators (FBOs) are advised to follow regulations to avoid legal consequences. FSSAI has asked State Food Safety Commissioners and Central Licensing Authorities to send a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within 15 days using the prescribed format provided. A list of recognised laboratories capable of testing samples for Auramine has been shared with authorities, ensuring that testing is done accurately and as per standards. This directive has been issued with the approval of the competent authority, using powers granted under Section 16(5) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
