FSSAI Grants Extension to NFP Units for Collection of Used Cooking Oil from Food Business

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has extended the provisional approval for 63 Non-Food Production (NFP) units that are responsible for collecting used cooking oil (UCO) from food businesses. These units play an important role in gathering used oil for the purpose of biodiesel manufacturing, contributing to both environmental sustainability and food safety.

According to the latest order, these 63 NFP units, listed in Annexure I, are now allowed to continue their operations until 31st July 2026. However, this extension is temporary and subject to change. It will remain valid either until the mentioned date or until a proper registration mechanism is established by the respective State or Union Territory, as required under the Gazette Notification issued on 30th April 2019 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Rules for These Units:

  1. They must follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), instructions, and guidelines issued by FSSAI.

  2. If any unit is found violating rules, submitting false information, or fails an inspection, FSSAI has the right to cancel their approval.

  3. This decision has been made with the approval of the Competent Authority.

This step ensures that the process of collecting and reusing used cooking oil is carried out in a regulated and responsible manner, reducing the risk of its reuse in food and promoting its use in eco-friendly biodiesel production.
