Food safety officials recently inspected the canteen at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), a research institute in Hyderabad. During their November 8, 2024, visit, the task force identified multiple violations.
Firstly, the canteen was operating without an FSSAI license. Additionally, no medical fitness certificates, FoSTaC training certificates, or temperature records were available.
The team also noted several safety and hygiene issues, including a live cockroach infestation in the kitchen and signs of a potential rodent problem in the storeroom, where rat droppings were discovered on the storage racks.
Furthermore, the kitchen’s dustbins were left open, and some food items in the cold room and refrigerator were unlabeled.
Inspectors from the food safety department discovered several expired cooking ingredients, such as Kohlapur jaggery, kasuri methi, corn flour, and sabudana, all of which had expired in October.
They also observed open dustbins that were attracting numerous houseflies and other pests. Additionally, food items stored in the refrigerators lacked proper labeling. Other products, including atta (wheat flour), were stored directly on the floor rather than on racks.
No certificates from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) or the Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) were present.
