The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled almost 2,000 cases of 7Up Zero Sugar Tropical Soda due to a serious labeling mistake. Cans marked as “Zero Sugar” were actually filled with regular soda containing sugar. This error creates health concerns, especially for people with diabetes or those trying to avoid sugar.
Where It Was Sold
The recalled drinks were distributed in 12-pack cartons of 12-ounce cans in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. According to the FDA’s enforcement notice, the affected products can be identified by UPC code 078000037975 on the cans and UPC code 078000037982 on the cartons. The lot numbers are XXXXBR062156 and XXXXBR062256, with a use-by date of March 23, 2026. A total of 1,954 cases are involved in the recall. While the scale of the recall may appear small, even limited cases are taken seriously when consumer health is at risk.
Why It Matters
At first glance, confusing zero-sugar soda with regular soda may not seem like a major problem. However, the effects can be significant. Many people choose zero-sugar drinks to manage their blood sugar levels, prevent weight gain, or lower the risk of chronic illnesses. For someone with diabetes, drinking regular soda instead of zero-sugar could lead to a sharp and dangerous rise in blood glucose. Because of this, the FDA has categorized the recall as Class II, which means the product can cause temporary or medically reversible health problems, though it is not considered life threatening.
How Recalls Work
Food and drink recalls follow a strict system. Once an issue is discovered through company checks, consumer complaints, or FDA inspections the product is classified by risk level.
- Class I: Very serious, can cause death or major illness.
-
Class II: Medium risk, may cause temporary or reversible issues.
-
Class III: Low risk, unlikely to harm health.
This 7Up recall falls into the Class II category, underlining the importance of correcting the labeling error and removing the affected stock from stores.
What Consumers Should Do
The FDA advises customers to carefully check their soda cans and cartons. If you bought 7Up Zero Sugar Tropical Soda:
-
Check the UPC codes, lot numbers, and dates on the cans or cartons.
-
If they match the recalled product, do not drink it.
-
