The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a public health alert for Jiva Organics ground cinnamon after tests showed elevated levels of lead. The affected product carries the lot code AF-CINP/822 with a “Best Before” date of July 2025. It was sold at Taj Supermarket and distributed by Spicy World of USA. The FDA has advised consumers to stop using this cinnamon and throw it away immediately, as prolonged exposure to lead can be unsafe. The agency has also recommended that the company recall the product voluntarily.
How It Was Found
FDA officials collected samples of the product from a retail store and discovered a lead concentration of 2.29 parts per million (ppm). According to the FDA, this amount is higher than safe levels and could pose health risks if consumed regularly.
Why Lead Is Dangerous
Lead is a toxic metal that should not be present in food in unsafe amounts. While it occurs naturally in the environment, it is harmful to humans when ingested. Children are especially at risk because their bodies are still developing. Even low levels of lead exposure can affect brain development, learning ability, and behavior. In very high amounts, lead can damage the brain and nervous system, causing serious conditions such as seizures, coma, or even death. Adults exposed to lead over long periods may face health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and kidney damage. Pregnant women are also at risk since lead exposure can harm fetal growth and increase the chances of preterm birth.
The FDA increased its testing of cinnamon products after a major incident in 2023, when cinnamon flavored applesauce pouches caused lead poisoning in more than 400 children. That contamination was linked to the WanaBana brand and led to widespread recalls.
What Consumers Should Do
If you have Jiva Organics ground cinnamon with the lot code AF-CINP/822, do not consume it. Check your pantry and discard the product immediately. If you think you or your child may have been exposed to lead through this cinnamon or other foods, consult a healthcare professional. Even if no symptoms appear right away, long term exposure can still be harmful.
