Coca-Cola has started testing an eco-friendly packaging design in Germany that removes plastic wrap from its bottle multipacks. Instead of using traditional plastic film, the company is using small glue dots to hold bottles together, along with a sturdy, recyclable cardboard handle for easy carrying. This trial is being carried out in collaboration with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) and is part of Coca-Cola’s broader efforts to cut down plastic waste and boost recyclability. The test is currently running in select PENNY stores across Germany.
Focus on sustainability and consumer experience
The new packaging is being used for Coca-Cola Original and Coca-Cola Zero in 6×1.25 litre bottle packs. Coca-Cola says this initiative is one of several eco-friendly packaging trials in Europe, alongside other designs like KeelClip, LitePacTop, and CanCollar. The adhesive dots are carefully positioned to keep bottles securely attached during transport and display. A recyclable cardboard handle helps consumers carry the multipack conveniently while minimizing waste. The design has been tested to ensure safety, stability, and durability.
Easy to separate and recycle
Consumers can easily twist or pull the bottles apart at the glue points. Clear in store instructions and simple graphics on the pack explain how to separate the bottles. Once the bottles are removed, the cardboard handle can be recycled with paper waste, and the PET bottles can go into standard plastic recycling bins. Coca-Cola says it is closely monitoring customer feedback during the pilot run to assess how well the new packaging performs and how shoppers respond to the change. This initiative supports the company’s goal of offering packaging that is lighter, more sustainable, and easier to recycle.
