Coca-Cola Issues Recall of Topo Chico Mineral Water Due to Bacteria Concerns

The Coca-Cola Company has initiated a recall of a limited quantity of its Topo Chico Mineral Water after discovering potential contamination with Pseudomonas bacteria. The affected product includes 16.9-ounce glass bottles, primarily sold across retail outlets in five U.S. states Arizona, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas.

According to a Coca-Cola spokesperson, all impacted products have been removed from approximately 40 retail locations. The company emphasized that no illnesses linked to the contamination have been reported thus far.

Retailers and Lot Numbers Affected

The recall notice specifically mentions that certain 18-packs of the mineral water were sold between May 20 and May 29 at select Costco warehouses in Texas and Louisiana. Some Sam’s Club locations also received affected stock. Consumers are advised to check for the following lot numbers: 11A2543, 12A2543, and 13A2541.

Customers who purchased the recalled items are encouraged to return them to the original place of purchase for a refund or exchange, or contact Coca-Cola directly at 1-800-GET-COKE.

Understanding the Bacterial Threat

Costco’s recall notice explained that Pseudomonas bacteria are naturally found in water sources, including mineral water. While the health risk to healthy individuals is considered minimal, those with compromised immune systems may experience minor health consequences if they consume the contaminated product.

Coca-Cola reaffirmed its commitment to consumer safety and product quality in an official statement, emphasizing that the quality and safety of its products remain the company’s top priority.

About Topo Chico and Coca-Cola’s Ownership

Coca-Cola acquired the Topo Chico sparkling mineral water brand in 2017 in a deal valued at $220 million. Since then, the beverage has become part of Coca-Cola’s expansive portfolio, which includes other popular names such as Dasani, Sprite, Fairlife, Powerade, Bodyarmor, Vitamin Water, and more.

Consumers are advised to remain vigilant and check lot numbers if they have recently purchased Topo Chico Mineral Water from affected regions.
