Cinnamon Recalled Across Various US States Due to Possible Lead Contamination

Ground and powdered cinnamon is being recalled across multiple US states due to excessive levels of lead, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a notice issued Monday, July 29.

Due to safety concerns, US has asked that the manufacturer of ground and powdered cinnamon to return because of the excessive amount of lead.

After the recall notice, the FDA announced an additional recall for another cinnamon brand that might be contaminated with lead.

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday said it was recommending recalls of nine brands of ground cinnamon products with elevated lead levels, ranging from 2.03 to 7.01 parts per million (ppm).

ALB-USA Enterprises, Inc. is recalling ALB Flavor brand Cinnamon Powder, according to the announcement. Between December 15, 2022, and May 13, 2024, the product was shipped to merchants in New York, Connecticut, Michigan, and Massachusetts.

Short-term exposure to extremely low amounts of lead may not result in any symptoms, according to the FDA.

Age and body weight, in addition to the quantity and duration of lead exposure, all influence the effects of lead exposure.

The FDA advises getting in touch with your healthcare practitioner if you are worried that you or any member of your family may be experiencing signs of lead toxicity.

Customers who have purchased the recalled product are urged to discard the product immediately or return it to their place of purchase for a full refund.

“It is critical to be aware of additional sources, like lead chromate-adulterated spices,” the CDC said in a weekly report that was released earlier this month.
