Cargill has secured the top position in the Edible Oil Supplier Index 2025, a first-of-its-kind global ranking released by the Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNi). This international non-profit organization assessed the eight largest edible oil suppliers on their efforts to reduce industrially produced trans-fatty acids (iTFAs), a major contributor to cardiovascular disease.
Cargill achieved an exceptional score of 81.4%, significantly outpacing the second-ranked company, which scored just 14.2%. The ranking is based on 19 rigorous indicators across four key categories: corporate strategy, product reformulation, stakeholder engagement, and transparency.
About Cargill
Cargill connects farmers, food manufacturers, and communities across 70+ countries through an integrated supply chain offering food, ingredients, and industrial solutions. Backed by 160,000 employees and a heritage of 160 years, the company is committed to nourishing the world in a way that is responsible, resilient, and regenerative
Eliminating Trans Fat Globally
Cargill’s leadership stems from its comprehensive removal of iTFAs from its entire global edible oils portfolio — including in regions where regulatory requirements are absent. This proactive approach aligns with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended limit of no more than 2 grams of iTFAs per 100 grams of total fat in food products.
David VandenEinde, Vice President of R&D for Food North America at Cargill said that their recognition by ATNi reinforces their longstanding commitment to responsible nutrition and global health. This milestone reflects years of strategic investment, customer collaboration, and product innovation.
From Challenge to Opportunity: Enabling Customer Success
Cargill’s leadership also lies in its ability to enable clients to transition without compromise. A notable example is Chantilly, a beloved Mexican bakery and confectionery brand, which collaborated with Cargill to reformulate its popular whipping cream products. Miriam Leticia Rodriguez Chigora, Chantilly’s R&D leader said that Cargill helped them to maintain the integrity of our product both in flavor and functionality while removing iTFAs entirely. They were not just suppliers, but true innovation partners.
Decades of Progress and Global Impact
Cargill’s journey began long before WHO’s 2018 REPLACE initiative, which called for a global phase-out of iTFAs. By January 2024, Cargill had become the first—and remains the only known—global edible oil supplier to achieve full compliance with WHO standards across its entire product line. Since then, the company has:
- Invested millions of dollars in capital improvements
- Dedicated thousands of R&D hours to innovation
- Supported hundreds of customers in product reformulation
- Removed more than 1.5 billion pounds of iTFA-containing products from the global food supply
Global Impact and Policy Leadership
As of the end of 2023, only 53 countries, covering less than half of the global population, had adopted WHO-recommended best-practice iTFA limits. In response, Cargill has actively supported governments and public health organizations in developing local iTFA regulations and implementation strategies. By acting as a global technical advisor and change agent, Cargill has helped accelerate the pace of nutrition policy adoption in markets where regulation is still emerging.
Conclusion
This latest recognition reaffirms Cargill’s core mission: to deliver safe, sustainable, and health-forward food solutions. With over 160 years of industry expertise, the company continues to lead initiatives that reshape the food landscape for generations to come.
VandenEinde expressed pride in the achievement, emphasizing that the recognition serves as a greater motivation to continue advancing change across the global food ecosystem. He affirmed that nutrition, sustainability, and safety must go hand in hand, underscoring Cargill’s commitment to building a healthier and more resilient food future.
