Agreement between India & Bhutan to Enhance Food Safety, Approved by Cabinet

On 13 March 2024, the Union Cabinet gave its approval for the signing of an agreement between India and Bhutan in the area of food security. The agreement involves the Bhutan Food and Drug Authority (BFDA), the Ministry of Health of the Royal Government of Bhutan, and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the signing of an Agreement between the Bhutan Food and Drug Authority (BFDA) and the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) in food safety. This initiative is intended to strengthen relations and enhance trade between India and Bhutan.

The press release highlights that the agreement signifies the increasing partnership between India and Bhutan, focusing on building cooperation to promise the safety and quality of food products exchanged between the two adjacent nations.

Agreement of India and Bhutan for food safety

It highlights both countries’ mutual dedication to maintaining strict Food Safety Standards, ensuring the protection of consumer’s health and welfare. According to the terms of the deal, BFDA, under the Ministry of the Royal Government of Bhutan, will work closely with FSSAI, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, to simplify procedures concerning food safety regulations.

BFDA will provide a health certificate to demonstrate keeping to the regulations set by FSSAI for goods being exported to India. This cooperative effort is expected to greatly simplify the business agreement between India and Bhutan.

Ultimately, lowering the expenses associated with compliance for companies on either end. Through the establishment of a uniform system for verifying food safety standards, the objective of the agreement is to efficient trade activities and enhance the graceful movement of products between the two nations.
