The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a public notice inviting nominations for the appointment of new members to its Central Advisory Committee (CAC). This move comes as the tenure of the current private members is set to expire on July 26, 2025. The authority aims to induct fresh expertise into the committee to continue its role in guiding national food safety and regulatory policies.
Role of the Central Advisory Committee
The Central Advisory Committee serves as a crucial link between the FSSAI and various enforcement agencies and stakeholders involved in the food ecosystem. Its primary function is to ensure smooth cooperation and provide expert advice to the Food Authority on several matters. These include prioritization of regulatory work, identification of emerging food safety risks, and the pooling of relevant scientific and technical knowledge. The committee typically meets three to four times a year to deliberate on key issues.
Composition and Tenure
As per FSSAI guidelines, the Central Advisory Committee includes:
Two expert members each from the following sectors:
- Food Industry
- Agriculture
- Consumer Bodies
- Relevant Research Organisations
- Food Laboratories
These members are appointed for a three-year term, with the option for re-appointment based on performance and eligibility.
Call for Nominations
FSSAI is now seeking nominations for individuals with appropriate qualifications, experience, and competence in the relevant sectors. These individuals will be appointed in their personal capacity to ensure independent and unbiased input into the advisory process. Organizations working in the fields mentioned above are encouraged to recommend candidates who have demonstrated significant contributions and possess deep domain knowledge.
Submission Guidelines
The nomination package should include:
- A duly filled application in the prescribed format
- A detailed resume of the candidate
- A record of services rendered in the relevant field
