In a significant crackdown, two factories in Greater Noida were found illegally packaging drinking water under the misleading brand name ‘Bilseri’. The label was clearly designed to resemble the well-known and trusted Bisleri brand, potentially deceiving thousands of unsuspecting consumers. With rising summer temperatures increasing the demand for bottled water, such counterfeit products pose serious health risks. The packaging used by these illegal units closely mimicked the original, making it difficult for consumers to differentiate between fake and genuine. Officials suspect that these operations were targeting high-footfall areas and smaller retailers to push their products into the market.
Gupta Enterprises Raided for Illegal Bottling
The first raid was conducted at Gupta Enterprises, located at K-300 in Site 5, Kasna Industrial Area. The factory was operating without a valid food safety license and was bottling water in one-litre containers under the fake ‘Bilseri’ name. A total of 6,252 bottles were discovered on-site. Out of these, one sample was collected by the food safety team for laboratory testing to check compliance with quality standards. The remaining 6,236 bottles were immediately sealed to prevent them from reaching the public. Authorities confirmed that no records of licensing or approval from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) were found at the premises.
Parametro Waser Technology Shut Down
The food department team also raided another unit, Parametro Waser Technology, at plot number 2/88 in the same industrial area. This factory, too, was found in violation of multiple food safety norms and lacked any legal certification for packaged water production. A total of 6,856 one-litre water bottles were found at the site. Like the first case, one bottle was taken for lab testing while 6,840 bottles were sealed by officials. The layout, labeling, and color scheme of the bottles were nearly identical to those of the original Bisleri bottles, increasing the risk of consumer confusion. The plant has been ordered to shut down operations immediately.
Food Department Cracks Down on Unsafe Water
Sarvesh Mishra, Assistant Commissioner of Food, confirmed that these raids are part of a broader summer drive to ensure food and water safety amid rising demand. He stated that ensuring the availability of safe and hygienic drinking water is a top priority for the department. According to Mishra, both factories were operating in clear violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, which requires all packaged water producers to meet stringent quality and hygiene standards. He also noted that more surprise checks will be conducted in the coming weeks to curb the spread of fake bottled water brands in the market.
Consumers Warned to Spot Fake Bisleri Lables
In light of these findings, the food department has issued a warning to consumers to remain vigilant while purchasing bottled water. They have urged people to check labels closely, verify the brand name, and look for FSSAI certification on packaging. With counterfeit products like ‘Bilseri’ flooding the market, especially in smaller towns and roadside shops, the risk of waterborne diseases from such unregulated sources is high. Officials have encouraged citizens to report any suspicious or poorly labeled bottled water to local authorities for investigation. Consumers are reminded that genuine Bisleri bottles come with distinct branding, tamper-proof caps, and QR codes for verification.
