Quality control and health authorities in Abu Dhabi have introduced a new nutrition grading system that will be required on five food items by June 1. This initiative aims to address the concerning obesity rates among residents of Abu Dhabi.
Starting in June 2025, certain food products sold in shops throughout Abu Dhabi will be required to feature a mandatory food labeling system known as the Nutri-Mark System. This nutritional grading system will be displayed on the packaging and will indicate the healthiness of the food.
The National News report indicates that food healthiness will be assessed using a grading system from A to E, with A representing the highest nutritional value and E the lowest. Initially, this grading will apply to dairy products, baked goods, children’s foods, beverages, and oils.
Children’s foods, including snacks and cereals, will feature this nutritional rating system. Eventually, the system will be implemented across all food items in the domain.
It’s important to highlight that any food item that does not meet the required standards or is found to have incorrect labeling will be removed from the market. While existing products have a six-month period to update their packaging, the new labels will remain valid for one year.
Additionally, manufacturers importing new products must already apply for the new labels. This initiative aims to address the issue of obesity, which is a concern not only in the UAE but throughout the region. The announcement of this nutritional grading system was made during the ongoing Abu Dhabi International Food Exhibition, which will continue until November 28.
These new labels have been designed to be clear and effective, indicating whether the food is healthy or not. Therefore, when you shop in Abu Dhabi next year, you will be able to make informed choices based on the nutritional value of the items you select.
